One of my favorite things to witness is art, skill, and talent being used in service to positive, cultural, and social impact. I love that the arts bring us entertainment and joy, but there’s something powerful about witnessing theatre, TV, and movies with a powerful message written in code.
Oscar Wilde once said, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.”
When we see a visionary and a group of artists be in-tuned so much that the art resonates deeply with life while not looking like life, but looking exactly like life…that’s special. It’s powerful. It’s poetic.
Sinners was beautifully layered in its cultural relevancy and storytelling. With so many intricate narratives of deceit, pain, love, resilience, and community written throughout, we’ll be feasting on the richness of its artistry for a while.
As always, Ryan Coogler shared our stories most beautifully. I’m grateful to be a part of this era of cultural artistry that tells the tales of black and brown pain, both past and present. Watching the film evolve reminded me of a quote from Zora Neale Hurston: “If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.” Our art is one of the ways that we use our voice to share our joy, our love, our passion, and our woes.
One of the most beautiful aspects of this film is that it is a dynamic refresher of what art is. It's a reminder of our stories, our communities, our imagination, and it galvanizes and gathers us in ways only art can. All and all, go be creative today and go see Sinners already.
