What’s in Demand? Labor Shortages in the Construction Industry Provide New Opportunity
Several industries this year have taken a hit due to various changing factors. But as I always mention, one of the aims of being a solutionist is the ability to cultivate an eye for opportunity amid problems because opportunity can lead to answers.
While layoffs have brought distress and career uncertainty to many, they equally highlight the opportunity to pivot into industries that are also shifting and are in high demand, such as the construction industry. Right now, the construction sector, which includes 15 industries within it, is expected to grow due to expanding needs for AI data centers, EV automobiles, and renewable energy initiatives.
“The construction industry is projected to grow 4.7 percent from 2023 to 2033, faster than the 4.0 percent projected for all industries. This growth will result in the addition of about 380,100 new jobs, bringing the projected employment growth in the construction industry to nearly 8.4 million by 2033.”

"Sudden career change can be difficult and stress-inducing, but please don’t quit on yourself or your next move."
This blog aims to provide insight into programs and initiatives in Chicago, IL, and surrounding areas that you can explore in the construction industry:
Hire360: A program that offers training, recruitment, and placement assistance in various industries, including construction, hospitality, and manufacturing. It also supports minority and women-owned businesses.
Illinois Works Construction Pre-apprenticeship Program: A state-funded program that provides pre-apprenticeship training to diverse individuals, preparing them for jobs in the construction and building trades.
ConstructionWorks: A program funded by the Tollway and administered by the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, offering training and placement for individuals entering the heavy highway and related construction industry.

Revolution Workshop: Offers construction and woodworking job training, focusing on individuals who may be transitioning to gainful employment after facing barriers like homelessness or incarceration.
Chicago Urban League: Provides apprenticeship programs, community trades, and CONSTRUCT initiatives, offering skills training, job readiness, and preparation for industry-specific testing.
The construction industry is expansive and growing, and beyond the obvious roles, there is always a need for admin-related tasks, including project managers, program managers, and more. Sudden career change can be difficult and stress-inducing, but please don’t quit on yourself or your next move.
