“What dey talking bout?”: Social Impact Entrepreneurship and Your Small Business

Writer: Imani WilkinsImani Wilkins

Social Impact Entrepreneurship is a term that is gaining more relevancy and attention as community and societal issues arise. Now, more than ever, it is vital that businesses (small and large) identify their direct impact on their partners, employees, and local communities.

For many small business owners, the recurring question of your involvement in social impact initiatives may be “Why and/or how can I prioritize social impact in my business?”

Recently, we watched the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs (Go Birds). Many observed rapper, Kendrick Lamar's performance which highlighted topics centered around the African American experience, stereotypes, and more in America, which is fitting for February which is Black History Month.

Your area of social impact may differ according to your business or position. However, you can add value to your community through sharing your skill set and knowledge with your local nonprofits, volunteering and partnering your time with philanthropic organizations, or using your public marketing platforms to highlight specific social impact initiatives.

Kendrick’s performance was an example of how to use your position for social impact. His message was about more than music. He used his art form and brand position to share engaging and thought-provoking messaging and imagery about the plight of marginalized groups in America. I can’t guarantee you’ll have as much impact as Kendrick, but I can guarantee that you won’t have any impact if you don’t get started.
